Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons margarine or butter
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg, optional
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence, optional
Method
- Mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
- Rub in margarine or butter until the mixture looks like fine crumbs.
- Add milk slowly and mix into a soft dough.
- Do not over-knead because scones can become hard.
- Roll or pat the dough and cut into circles or wedges.
- Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 18 to 20 minutes.
For soft scones, avoid overworking the dough. Mix gently and bake while the dough is still fresh.
